Roulette is said to have emerged in 18th century France and the word ‘Roulette’ itself is derived from a French word which means a ‘little wheel’.

American, European and French roulette are some of its prevalent types which differ usually on the basis of the numbers available on the roulette wheel, a slight variation in bets and rules.

  • American Roulette: US roulette wheel comprises of slots numbered from 1 to 36 plus a zero and a double zero. Betting layout consist of individual bets as well as the host of outside bets-allowed at the combination of numbers.
  • European Roulette: The European Roulette wheel contains 37 pockets with numbers from 0 to 36 and presents better odds as compared to American roulette which features 38 numbers. French roulette is sometimes a more primitive form but is almost similar to European roulette.

This is the only major difference between European and American Roulette types but since the European versions has less numbers on the wheel; the chance of winning is slightly higher in European Roulette.

Online Roulette Simple Rules

  • In Roulette, it is customary that before indulging players shall make their bets. Bet can be made on a single number or group of numbers. It can also be placed on colors- black/red or on the fact whether the number is even or odd.
  • Roulette provides a number of bets to choose from. The simplest rule is to decide which bet to choose and the betting amount to put on stake (which the players buy in the form of chips). Roulette involves chips of various colors where every set has around 300 chips with no denomination printed on them. The roulette table comes with 6 to 8 different sets of chips, when a player purchases his own chips he gets his own color and value of one chip is the average of by-in to that of the total chips. In online Roulette one doesn’t have to buy chips, the balance in one’s casino account is used.
  • Just like in land based casino where when the bet has been decided or announced, the winning number is determined by spinning a wheel in one direction by the croupier, whereas a ball is spun in the opposite direction on the circumference of the wheel. Playing Blackjack is really easy online, for in both American and European players simply place their bets on the table and press the spin button.
  • As the ball slows down, it eventually falls in one of the 37/38 colored (alternate black and red) pockets on the wheel. As the ball halts, the croupier announces the results, collects the losing bets and pays the winners.

The Roulette table has two main sections- the ‘inside’ and the ‘outside’ section which allow bettors to indulge in various types of wagers.

Roulette Bets

Roulette is a casino game which has the simplest set of rules where all you have to do is place an amount on a decided bet namely inside, outside or announced. The bets on the basic ground can also be listed as simple chances and multiple chances on the basis of payout.

  • Simple Chances: This includes bets that deal with a group of numbers- for instance making a bet on all reds/blacks, even/odd numbers or the lower (1-18) or higher (19-36) numbers etc. They give out payout in ratio 1 to 1 i.e. if you bet $5 on winning you will win the same amount. Hence the bets in the inner bet and outside bet section with payout 1:1 (also called even bets) are simple chance bets.
  • Multiple Chances: In this case the chances of winning are lower than that of simple chances but on winning, the payouts offered are higher.

Inside bets

  • Straight Up: In this the player bets on a single number and the chip is placed in the middle of the number square. It pays 35 to 1 if the bettor wins, which means that if you bet $10, you will earn C$10*35= C$350 plus the original betted amount.
  • Split: In Split the player make a bet on horizontal or vertical adjoining numbers. In this case the chip is placed on the line between the two numbers on the roulette table. These bets pay 17 to 1 i.e. 17:1 payoff if the bettor wins.
  • Street: In this case, bet is placed on three numbers at a time which fall on the same horizontal line. In this bet the chip is placed at the edge (either left or right) of the line which contains the numbers the player has betted on. It leads to 11:1 payout on winning.
  • Corner/Square: In this case the bet is played on four numbers which from a square on the roulette table. Here chip is placed at the horizontal or vertical intersection of the lines between the four numbers. This bet pays 8 to 1 (8:1) which means a bet of C$10 will land you C$80 on winning.
  • Six Line/Double Street: This inside bet is played on two street bets i.e. three numbers each from two horizontal lines and the chip is placed at the intersection of the two street bets. It pays 6 to 1 on winning.
  • Trio: In this inside bet, the bet is placed on intersecting point between 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3. It also pays 11 to 1 on winning just like the street bet.
  • Basket (Single Zero Layout): It is a bet where the player bets on first four numbers- 0, 1, 2 and 3- which don’t form a square. Its pay off is 8:1.
  • Basket (Double-Zero Layout): Here the bet is placed on 0, 1 and 2; 0, 00 and 2; or 00, 2 and 3 where the chip is placed at the intersection of the three desired numbers. It pays in ratio 11:1 if the bettor wins the bet.
  • Top Line: In this case the bet is placed on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 where the chip is placed either at the corner of 0 and 1, or at the corner of 00 and 3. On winning, its pays off in ratio 6:1.

Outside bets: These have smaller payouts but with better odds at winning.

  • 1 to 18: Here the bettor bets on the low eighteen numbers coming up. It pays in ratio 1:1 i.e. if you bet C$10 you will win the same amount plus the bettor will get back the original stake. Such bets which provide 1:1 payout are also called ‘even bets’.
  • 19 to 36: As the bet’s name conveys, this allows betting on latter high numbers from 19 to 36. It also pays in 1 to 1 ratio on winning.
  • Red or Black: A bettor can bet on the color at which the ball will stop after twirling of the roulette wheel. Bet on red or black- a bet in this category will pay 1:1 payouts.
  • Even or Odd:Bettors are allowed to make a bet on any non-zero number, putting their stakes on either odd or even outcome. Its payout is also in ratio 1:1.
  • Dozen bet: It involves placing bet on first 12(1-12) numbers, second twelve (13-24) and third twelve (25- 36) numbers available on the roulette table. Each group gives a payout of 2 to 1 if the bettor wins the bet.
  • Column bet: It also involves betting on group of 12 numbers but this time it remains restricted to the vertical lines. The chip is placed at the end of the vertical columns chosen for the bet. Column bets also pay in ratio 2:1 on winning.
  • Snake bet: It involves betting on the following 12 numbers: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. As it involves group of 12 numbers, it is also considered as a special ‘dozen’ bet.

Announced bets

If you want to put your stake on the bets which are not listed on the roulette table, you will have to announce the wager. Such bets usually cover lot of numbers in a single bet hence you should know that in actual you are placing multiple bets at one time. These are of five types:

  • Voisins du Zero: When you announce this bet you refer to all the neighbors of zero and zero- itself: 0, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, 32 and 35. For this you need nine total betting units to announce this wager.
  • Tiers du Cylindre: It covers 12 numbers of the roulette table- 5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 23, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36. You need six betting units to announce this bet.
  • Orphelins: This bet covers numbers- 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31 and 34. In order to announce this bet you need five betting units.
  • Final: It is not a fixed bet. It depends upon the number you announce, for example if you announce ‘final 2’, all the numbers ending in 2 will be included in the wager- in this case 12, 22 and 32 will be included.
  • Neighbors: In this case, when you choose a number, its two neighbors- each on left and right will also be covered making a total of five numbers covered under the bet.

The following rules are also available for play especially in French roulette:

– En Prison Rule: This is applied only to the even bets, if zero turns up the player gets the following two options:

  • Reclaim the half of the original stake and leave
  • Leave the bet for the next spin for an all or nothing gamble. If zero again appears on the next spin or the bet does not match, the whole bet is lost. On the reverse scenario, the player’s money is returned.

– La Partage Rule: In this case the person doesn’t have an option, when a zero appears the player looses half his bet.
